As 2026 approaches, UAE residents are already planning their annual leave to make the most of public holidays and long weekends. With careful scheduling, it’s possible to extend short breaks into longer holidays, maximizing time off while using fewer leave days.
The UAE observes seven official public holidays in 2026. While Islamic holiday dates depend on moon sightings, early predictions by the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) provide guidance for planning. Combining these holidays with annual leave strategically can create extended breaks throughout the year.
Here’s a practical overview:
New Year – January 1 is a public holiday. By taking Friday, January 2 off, you can enjoy a four-day break including the weekend.
Eid Al Fitr – Expected from Friday, March 20 to Sunday, March 22. Taking leave on March 16 allows for a seven-day break.
Arafat Day and Eid Al Adha – Predicted for late May, with Arafat Day on Tuesday, May 26 and Eid Al Adha from Wednesday, May 27 to Friday, May 29. Booking Monday, May 25 off can create a nine-day holiday.
Islamic New Year – June 17 falls on a Wednesday. Taking leave on June 18 and 19 can result in a five-day break.
Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Birthday – Expected on Tuesday, August 25. Taking Monday, August 24 off allows for a four-day weekend.
UAE National Day – December 2–3. Taking leave on November 30, December 1, and December 4 can extend this into a nine-day break.
By combining these holidays with just nine days of annual leave, employees can enjoy up to 38 days away from work in 2026.
Tips for Making the Most of Your Annual Leave
Plan early: Submit your leave requests well in advance, especially for busy periods like school holidays or festive seasons.
Use official channels: Always apply through your company’s documented system to ensure transparency and avoid conflicts.
Stay flexible: If your preferred dates clash with business needs, consider alternative options to secure your leave.
Common Reasons Leave Requests May Be Denied
Operational requirements: Critical roles may have restrictions during peak periods.
Overlapping requests: When multiple employees request the same dates, priority may be given based on business impact.
Policy violations: Late submissions or repeated attempts to bridge holidays may be declined.
Insufficient leave balance: Requests exceeding your entitlement are unlikely to be approved.
Important notes: Islamic holiday dates are based on moon sightings and may shift. Weekends are assumed to be Saturday–Sunday, but always check your company’s HR policy for specific rules. Planning carefully ensures that you can maximize your time off while respecting both company policies and local holiday regulations.
