The football world witnessed an electrifying start to the FIFA Club World Cup as European giants Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain delivered masterclass performances that left opponents shell-shocked on Sunday's opening day.
In what will be remembered as one of the most lopsided matches in tournament history, German powerhouse Bayern Munich unleashed a devastating 10-goal demolition of amateur side Auckland City at Cincinnati's TQL Stadium. The Bundesliga champions turned the Group C encounter into a training exercise, with substitute Jamal Musiala netting a second-half hat-trick while Kingsley Coman, Michael Olise and veteran Thomas Müller all bagged braces.
"We approached this with complete professionalism," stated Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. "While we must stay grounded, this was exactly the statement we wanted to make entering this competition."
The match represented football's ultimate David vs Goliath story - Auckland's squad of semi-professionals requiring unpaid leave from their day jobs to compete against one of Europe's elite clubs. "This was our players' dream moment against world-class opposition," acknowledged interim coach Ivan Vicelich. "The scoreline reflects reality, but nothing diminishes our pride in reaching this stage."
PSG Lights Up Rose Bowl With Flawless Display
Meanwhile at California's iconic Rose Bowl - site of the 1994 World Cup final - newly-crowned Champions League winners PSG delivered a scintillating 4-0 dismantling of Spanish heavyweights Atletico Madrid before 80,619 spectators baking under 31°C (88°F) sunshine.
The French champions showcased why they're considered tournament favorites through goals from Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha before halftime, followed by late strikes from Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in that completed Atleti's misery. Luis Enrique's men replicated their free-flowing European form against an opponent that simply had no answers for their attacking verve.
"This represents a new chapter in our historic season," declared PSG's triumphant manager. "The hunger remains - from players, fans and club alike - to keep adding trophies." A philosophical Diego Simeone conceded: "They outplayed us completely with superior quality across the pitch."
Tight Contests Complete Opening Day
The action-packed day saw Brazilian champions Botafogo edge MLS side Seattle Sounders 2-1 through first-half headers from Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus before surviving intense second-half pressure. In New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, South American giants Palmeiras battled Portuguese powerhouse Porto to a tense goalless draw in Group A action.
